Things I Want to Teach Eden

Sometimes the magnitude of the blessing and opportunity of what it means to be a parent dawns on me.  Tonight I am struck with the task ahead and the urgency to teach these things to my daughter while she is in her earliest beginnings.  Of course, if I am to teach her to be these things, I must too be an example of them.  It is humbling to realize the trust the Lord has demonstrated in me by placing one of His innocent and pure children in my arms.

Things I want Eden to know and will strive to instill in her.

Develop a connection to your name and be loyal to it.  Your name means something.  Discover what that it is and hold on to it.

Be confident in your individuality.

Make decisions based on what is best for you versus what other people will think of you because of your decisions.

Embrace the differences in other people.  Their differences will teach you to be compassionate and loving.

Don't, no matter what, put others down to elevate yourself above them.  No one is less than you.

I repeat, no one is less than you.

Be grateful for trials, if you are patient in enduring them, they will teach you to be humble.

Whatever talents you are given are given to you from the Lord.  Use them to lift, strengthen and help others.

If you wonder what your talents are, you will discover them through service.

Don't be afraid of people's reaction to you.  Have courage to be true to yourself and be true to your righteous desires.

Being true to your righteous desires will lead you down the path Heavenly Father desires for you.

Don't complain.  Complaining comes from being too near-sighted.

If you find yourself complaining, expand your vision and look at the eternal perspective.  By doing so, you will find much to be grateful for.

Should you be blessed with wealth, remember that those without are still no less than you.  Also, use your wealth to bless others.

Should you be blessed with  a face that the world calls beautiful, remember you are no better than your character, your heart, and your actions.

Should you be blessed with many friends, remember those who have not as many and make them your friends too.

Do not use titles to refer to groups of people, they are not defined by stereotypes, just like you are not.

Allow others the freedom to discover who they are.  Allow them to choose as they will.  Allow them to be themselves without a critical stare.

The world is full of negative messages.  Messages that are meant to make us feel inadequate.  Don't let your lips be guilty of berating words.  Your voice is an instrument, use it to lift, strengthen, and help others.

Forgive others.  Your most meaningful friendships and relationships will require it and they will be better for it.   You will seek forgiveness from the Lord, do not deny it to others - even if they do not ask for it.

Be loving.

Be genuine.

Be true.

Be graceful.

Be kind.
